Each rib unit of an umbrella consists of a main rib (2), a support rib (3), a bearing rib (5) and an auxiliary support rib (6) which are all connected to one another. Attached pivotably to the ends of the bearing ribs (5) are folding ribs (8) which, in the open state of the umbrella, form extensions of the bearing ribs (5). In the closed state of the umbrella, these folding ribs (8) lie folded along the bearing ribs (5). An elongate slide piece (10) is connected to each folding rib (8) by means of a curved connecting part (9). When the umbrella is opened, the folding ribs are stretched out by these slide pieces (10). Part of the slide piece (10) is formed by a spring (10a). Each slide piece (10) is forced by the effect of a helical spring (13) arranged in the bearing rib (5) in the direction in which the folding ribs (8) are folded. The folding ribs (8) can thus be folded automatically when the umbrella is closed. <IMAGE>
