The ship board winch has measuring instruments for the bearing forces which are proportional to the cable tension in a plane at the winch drum bearings. There is also a movable cable guide in front of the drum. The cable guide (8) is adjustably arranged normal to the measuring plane (X) for the bearing forces of the drum (1) in a region, corresponding to the spacing between the drum hub and the highest cable layer position. The cable guide has preferably a servo-drive, controlled by cable layers.
