The unloader has a lift (2) with a sensor (L4,L5) on a support (18,19) projecting towards the pallet conveyor (13). The sensor is directed towards the next pallet waiting on the pallet conveyor whilst the immediate pallet is in the lift. The sensors stop the lift drive when the upper edge of the load (16) on the waiting pallet is exceeded by the pallet being lifted when a switch (L3) has detected the absence of a layer of goods on the pallet. The sensor, or sensors, can be adjusted horizontally or vertically.
