The invention relates to a method for the diagnosis of disease, especially cancer, by determining in plasma or serum from a suspected patient the concentration of a factor or factors which enhances the cortisol metabolism in lymphocytes or leucocytes. Thus, the rate at which cortisol is metabolised in lymphocytes or leucocytes in the presence of serum or plasma from a healty donor and the rate at which cortisol is metabolised in lymphocytes or leucocytes in the presence of serum or plasma from a patient under test are determined, and a significantly reduced rate of metabolism is indicative of the presence of disease. |
