Fuel injection IC engine - has piston and cylinder head arranged for easy ignition of fuel in separate chamber

The engine has an ignition chamber (9) in the cylinder head which contains a fuel injector (13) and a sparking plug (15). A narrow passage (10) connects the chamber with the cylinder. The piston (2) has a recess (4) which forms the main combustion chamber. The jet (17) of fuel from the injector is directed through the ignition chamber (9) and connecting passage (10) onto the wall (18) of the piston recess (4) on which it spreads as a thin film. On the compression stroke air and remaining exhaust are forced into the ignition chamber so as to entrain fuel droplets from the jet (17) and form a combustible mixture which is easily ignited.
