Ethanol is made from sugar cane by first cutting the cane into chips and treating these with steam at 0.5-5.0 atmos., esp. 2.0 atmos., for 5-45 mins., esp. 15 mins. The material is then cooled to is approx. 30 degrees C and subjected directly to ethanol fermentation by addn. of a suitable yeast. Fermentation is continued for 18-48 hours, pref. 24 hours. The steam treatment opens the sugar-contg. cells and allows the material to be fermented directly. Continuous processing is possible. The ethanol is recovered by distn. and is useful as substitute for mineral oil as a fuel. |
