A paper web is couched from a wire in a Fourdrinier papermaking machine by a pick-up roll disposed in a felt loop and is pressed between the pick-up roll and a press roll, the pick-up roll having a suction box extending between the couching point and the press nip, and there being means to dry the felt after the web is separated therefrom. The drying means may comprise a suction or plain press, suction boxes, or fabric presses. In one embodiment a wire belt is disposed within the felt loop and passes around the pick-up roll, and both the felt and belt passes over a suction box, with the felt optionally passing through a suction press. |
