1,130,034. Glass manufacture. KANTHAL A.B. 4 Nov., 1965 [11 Nov., 1964], No. 46781/65. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H5] An article used in contact with molten glass, particularly an electrode, comprises, in at least that part in contact with the molten glass, silicides of molybdenum and/or tungsten together with at least one vitreous oxide. The embodiments disclosed describe electrode structures in glass forehearths. The electrodes may be rods of a uniform cross-section throughout their length or be rods having a larger diameter at the end in contact with the molten glass. The former type have an arrangement for attaching new rods to replace the old as they are consumed. A preferred electrode is composed of 90% by weight molybdenum silicide and 10% by weight of a vitreous oxide component consisting of 90% SiO 2 and the remainder Al 2 O 3 , CaO, MgO, Na 2 O and H 2 O. Up to 5% of a montmorrillonite group clay may be added. |
