A heated solid body, e.g. one which has been heated to an elevated temperature in a heat treatment process, is cooled by immersion in a bed of solid particles fluidized by a cooling liquid. The particle size may range from 0.5-5 millimetres and typical liquids mentioned are water and oil. In the only example described a copper sphere is cooled from 800 DEG C. to 500 DEG C. in 4.6 seconds by immersion in a bed of 1 mm. diameter lead shot fluidized by water flowing at 100 galls./min./foot2.
