The guide-rod linkage system, hinged to a lengthways abutment, has its backfilling-side end coupled to a piston rod via a hydraulically activated forwarding cylinder, on a shield support frame installed in a moderate sized seam working in a mine. The end of the housing for the cylinder (26) on the back-filling side is plugged together with a swivelling mounting (34) hinged to the end of the guide rod system (46) on this side. The housing's facing side end is detachably connected to batten-type retainers (35) on this swivelling mounting. This simplifies accessibility to the cylinder for installation, repairs or servicing, even with the frame fully retracted.
