The lighting element (1) of the stand has a cavity with light impermeable walls in which at least one light source (8) is mounted and which is provided with a light opening (2). This opening through which the light emerges is linked to an inner end side (11) of the display stand (3) which is made of a translucent substance. The lighting effect achieved is especially good whilst the design of the stand does not have to be restricted. The lighting element can be in the form of a box designed as the foot or a hollow column forming an integrated part of the entire unit. The light from the light source enters the stand via the inner end side passing through the material of the stand to the outer roughened or facetted end side of the shelf where it emerges.
