Ortho-cyanoazo dyestuffs are obtained in good yields and high purity by conversion of appropriate ortho-halogenoazo dyestuffs with complex metal cyanides of the formula MepCu(CN)p+1 wherein Me=alkali metal p=1-3 in pure water, i.e. without adding organic solvents and/or catalysts. The process is more economic and easier to handle as compared with the known "cyano exchange" methods.
