PURPOSE:To prevent erosion by cooling water and prolong the life of a mold by providing a plating protective layer on the inside surface of the mold base body and the under end surface of the mold base body. CONSTITUTION:A plating layer 4 is provided on the inside surface of a mold base body 1 comprising copper or copper alloy, and a plating layer 3 of the same kind as that of this plating layer 2 or different kind is provided on the under end surface 2 of the mold base body, as well. It is not always necessary to provide the plating layer 3 of the under end surface 2 over the entire width, and in general, said layer is made about 30-80% of the width of the mold base body 1. Nickel, nickel- phosphorus alloy, chromium, etc. are used for the inside surface plating layer 4. The plating layer 3 of the under end surface of the base body is mainly intended to provide chemical erosion resistance, unlike heat extracting, cooling and abrasion resistance of the molten steel which are the purpose of the inside surface plating layer 4, and it is desirable to form said layer by a protecting film thicker than the inside surface plating layer 4. |
