PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound which is an important synthetic intermediate for a dye, etc. in high yield in a short time, by treating dinitronaphthalene with hydrazine in the presence of a ferric salt catalyst, a carrier therefor and an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. CONSTITUTION:Dinitronaphthalene is treated with hydrazine hydrate in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, in the presence of a ferric salt, e.g. ferric fluoride or bromide, and a carrier therefor, e.g. active carbon or activated alumina, as a catalyst at room temperature to 150 deg.C to give the titled compound. The reducing agent hydrazine changes into gaseous nitrogen only and causes no pollution problem of disposal treatment. The method is industrial and advantageous without requiring the purification of the raw material. |
