An electrical energy consumption meter is adaptable for either AC or DC power systems. It measures energy received or provided and is partic. where the vehicle motor also generates power during braking. Voltage (1) and current (2) sensors contain Hall effect devices which sense current in a winding to control an amplifier to provide an output signal. The signals are multiplied (3) to provide a voltage proportional to power which is then applied to a rectifier (6) and sign detector (7) to determine whether the power is being supplied or consumed. An integrator converts the valve to a frequency which is applied via a handling circuit (8) to decide which of two counters (9,10) should be used to indicate power consumed or power supplied.
