<p>An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprises an ignition coil (7) having a primary winding (6) and a secondary winding (10), a switch (8) for interrupting current flow in the primary winding (6) at an ignition instant, and an overvoltage protection circuit (16), including a threshold value switch (17) and an auxiliary winding (15) which is constructionally combined with and inductively coupled to the ignition coil (7).
