The backrest (3) of the chair is guided by a guide (12) along a backrest support (4) which can be tilted about a pivot axis (8) and is pressed outwards against a stop (15) by tension springs (6) which are fixed by their top end (9) to the backrest support (4) and by their opposite end (7) to the backrest (3). This can also be achieved by a weight or by a combination of spring force and weight. When the chair user leans back, a relative movement takes place between his upper body and the backrest support (4), by means of which relative movement the smoothly guided backrest (3) follows the upper body. An enhancement of the seating comfort is thus achieved since the clothing resting on the backrest cushion is neither pulled up when the user leans back nor pulled down when he leans forward. <IMAGE>
