Ti accumulator has anodes and cathodes with active compsns. which are the same, Ti2(SO4)3 or Ti2O3, in the discharged state, whilst in the charged state the positive compsn. is oxidised to Ti2(S2O8)3 or Ti2(SO5)3 and the negative compsn. is reduced to spongy Ti. The concn. of the electrolyte is maintained during operation, so that the vol. and wt. of the accumulator can be reduced by saving the amt. of electrolyte soln. Ti is pref. used as support for the active compsns. to save wt. compared with the Pb accumulator (sp.gr. of Pb 11.35, of Ti4.5). The electrolyte is an aq. soln. of 20% Al2(SO4)3, 30% Na2SO4 or 30% (NH4)2SO4. The accumulator is lighter and more economical than the Pb accumulator and resistant to rough handling.
|
