Xylenes in a mixt. of C8 alkylaromatic compds. were isomerized in the gas phase over a cryst. aluminosilicate zeolite contg. SiO2 and Al2O3 at 260-427≦̸C and partial pressure of the C8 alkylaromatic compds. below 7 kg/cm2 (100 1b/in2). By the process, long on-stream periods of low pressure gas phase isomerization of xylenes was achieved without formation of ethylbenzene.
