[Also in Division C6] A process for treating diarrhoea in pigs and thereby stimulating their growth comprises administering to growing pigs bifidebacteria obtained from the intestines and/or faeces, of pigs. The bifidobacteria may be administered as a preparation obtained by mixing bifidobacteria into a gelatinised starch paste to which L-cysteine and/or glutathione have been added, refrigerating the mixture and then drying it; or by freezing a liquid containing viable bifidobacteria, stirring it with the addition of gelatinized starch powder and preferably drying to granular form. The preparations may also contain sodium glutamate, sodium aspartate or lysine. The bifidobacteria comprised mainly pig strains of Bifidobacterium thermophilum. |
