PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound easily and economically, by reacting a water-containing t-butanol such as the azeotropic mixture of t-butanol and water, with phenol in the presence of a synthetic silica-alumina catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Hydrous t-butanol containing about 12-30wt% of water is made to react with phenol (1-4mol per 1 mole of t-butanol) in liquid phase, pref. under pressure, at 220-300 deg.C, especially 220-290 deg.C, in the presence of a synthetic silica- alumina catalyst [mainly composed of SiO2 (60-90wt%) and Al2O3 (40-10wt%) and optionally added with other metal oxides] to obtain the objective p-t-butylpheol. The space velocity of the raw material mixture is pref. 0.1-10, especially 0.5-5. EFFECT:Romoval of water from the system is not necessary. The life of the catalyst is long. |
