C. engine, comprises a piston P, Fig. 2, rotatable about a fixed tabular shaft W with the interposition of a piston bush B and formed with a plurality of arms (three shown) carrying at their ends rollers 19 which co-operate with the inner profile 11 of substantially figure-of-eight configuration of a casing 12 supported by bearings 15, 16 for rectilinear movement so that as the piston rotates the casing reciprocates to provide variable volume chambers between the piston and the casing. The rollers 19 are mounted by their ends in end walls 13, 14 which close the ends of the casing 12 and rotate with the piston. The shaft W includes a diametral partition and radial ports which cooperate with radial ports in the piston bush B to permit the admission of a gaseous fuel/air mixture and the exhaust of spent gasses from the variable volume chambers. The piston is rotated from its Figs. 2 position anti-clockwise whence the upper roller 19 urges the casing leftwards from its extreme right position. At the same time the shaft ports are unmasked so that the gaseous fuel/ air mixture is admitted to the chamber V, and spent gases exhausted from the chamber following the upper roller. The chamber V, then expands with the inlet port remaining opening until just before it reaches its maximum volume. The charge is then compressed and ignited when the casing reaches its extreme left position and is finally expanded and exhausted during rightward movement of the casing. The phases of suction, compression, expansion and exhaust take place in succession in the three chambers.
