Compounds containing sulphur-nitrogen groups, such as S4N4, S5N5+ salts and poly(sulphur nitride), are made by reducing S4N3Cl or related compounds with anions (e.g. iodide) or metals (e.g. silver). Poly(sulphur nitride) may be made by passing S4N3Cl vapor or S5N5FeCl4 vapor through sulphidized silver wool and condensing the vapor.
