A cordless electric toothbrush is driven through gearing from a reversible electric motor, switching means being provided for selectively controlling the direction of rotation of the motor shaft, and the arrangement being such that rotation of the motor shaft in one direction produces axial reciprocation of an output shaft 22, to which a toothbrush is attached, and rotation of the motor shaft in the opposite direction produces rotary oscillation of the shaft 22. A pinion 60 on the motor shaft meshes a gear 62 on a fixed shaft 56. Located within an extension of the gear 62 is a cam member 63 which is engaged by a pin 67 on the gear 62. An arm 66 secured to the output shaft 22 has an elongated recess 74 which engages a pin 65 on the top of the cam member 63. The control means include a positive detent 78a which may engage between lugs 63c on the periphery of cam 63. For oscillation of shaft 22, gear 62 is driven in the direction of the arrow shown and rotates cam 63 in the same direction by virtue of pin 67 engaging a slot 75a in cam 63. The oscillation is then imparted through pin 65 and arm 66. For axial reciprocation of shaft 22, gear 62 is rotated in the opposite direction, detent 78a prevents rotation of cam 63, and oscillation is produced by the engagement of pin 67 in an endless cam groove 75 in cam 63. |
