PRODUCTION OF SURFACE DECARBONIZED HIGH CARBON STEEL STRIP

PURPOSE:To provide superior bendability by subjecting a hot rolled or cold rolled steel strip of carbon steel contg. more than specific amount of C first to descaling to make open coil, then annealing the same at <=A1 transformation point in a decarbonization atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:This consists of a process of forming a hot rolled or cold rolled steel strip which comprises carbon steel contg. >=0.3wt% C and has been subjected to descaling to an open coil, and a process of annealing this coil at temperatures of <=A1 transformation point (particularly A1 transformation point -640 deg.C range) in a decarbonizing atmosphere to form a decarbonized layer of arbitrary uniform depth in the surface layer of the coil. The member obtained from this steel strip has superior bendability.
