PURPOSE:To readily obtain the titled compound having one more carbon atom in good yield, by bringing a raw material gas containing saturated monocarboxylic acids, such as acetic acid and ester thereof, and formaldehydes into contact with a catalyst having a P-V-Ti-O based composition. CONSTITUTION:A raw material gas containing acetic acid and/or an ester thereof or propionic acid and/or an ester thereof and formaldehyde and/or a derivative thereof is brought into contact with a catalyst containing a component expressed by the formula (P, V, Ti and O are phosphorus, vanadium, titanium and oxygen; a, b, c and d each are the numbers of P, V, Ti and O atoms; b is 2-20mol.%; c is 10-50mol.%; d is the number required to satisfy the valences of the components except O when a+b+c is 100mol.%) to afford the aimed compound. The catalyst used is obtained by heat-treating a mixture or reaction product of ammonium salts, halides, oxides, etc., of the component elements. |
