PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound industrially advantageously useful as a raw material for resins, etc., by reacting a phenol having hydrogen at orthoposition with methanol in the presence of a catalyst consisting of iron oxide, a metallic oxide, e.g., gallium oxide, etc. and chromium oxide under heating. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a catalyst consisting of (a) iron oxide, (b) a metallic oxide selected from the group consisting of gallium oxide, germanium oxide, yttrium oxide, niobium oxide, hafnium oxide, tantalum oxide, and bismuth oxide and (c) chromium oxide, preferably in blending ratio of a (a) to (b) and (c) of 1g iron atom of (a) to 0.005-0.15g atom of (b) and 0.001-0.05g atom of (c), a phenol (e.g., phenol, o-cresol) having one or more hydrogens at orthopositions is reacted with methanol under heating preferably at 300-400 deg.C in gas phase, to give the desired compound useful for preparing a polyphenylene resin, etc. in high activity and selectivity while preventing the decomposition of methanol and preserving prolonged life of catalyst. |
