1290258 Cutting glass LIBBEY-OWENSFORD CO 24 April 1970 [2 May 1969] 19675/70 Heading C1M A method of cutting glass sheets is characterized by directing heat against the surface of the sheet concentrated along a line corresponding to the desired line of cut from a heat source spaced from said surface. The sheet is scored at its edges only at opposite ends of the desired cutting line prior to applying the heat. The heat source may be an electrically heated wire 15 located in a longitudinal cavity 17 in an insulating member 16, which cavity opens on to the sheet along a line corresponding to the line of cut. A bar (34) may replace the wire, Fig. 6 (not shown). Alternatively the heat source may comprise a tube 37 having a plurality of orifices 47 arranged in a row corresponding to the line of cut and an electrical air heater 38 which supplies the tube with heated air. The glass sheet 12 is supported by a cushion of air supplied from a plenum chamber 28 and through a plurality of holes 31. The holes are covered with a layer of air pervious non-abrasive material 32 such as felt.
