REciprocating compressed air engine - has twisted steel bands to transform reciprocating into rotary motion

The engine has pistons (R) reciprocating in cylinders (B). The pistons are moved by compressed air admitted through valves (C) which are operated by switches at the ends of the piston stroke. Each piston has a holder disc (K) attached to it. Steel bands (J) run from the holder disc to a wheel (Z). In one direction of the piston movement these bands become twisted and in the other direction their spring force unwinds them. The twisting and untwisting motion transforms the reciprocation of the pistons into rotation of the wheel. An electromagnetic coupling (A) is provided between the wheel (Z) and the output gears (P).
