The pulverised fuel inlet is for a burner or reactor, having an immersion pipe (6) protruding into the fluidised bed, and acting as a metering device. As an alternative there can be an air/oxygen or combustion gas pipe (4) to the burner or reactor, passing through the bed and acting as a metering device. The pipe has a port intermittently shut off, typically by a rotary body (5) having a port brought into line with that in the pipe. The immersion pipe can be adjustable.
