The selection control for a four wheel drive differential has a shift rod moving into one of four settings, with three of the settings controlled by a hand selector lever. The middle setting represents a neutral setting in which the driver can touch the accelerator in order to aid the synchromesh when moving into four wheel drive. The fourth setting is selected by a pneumatic servo, and serves to lock the differential in four wheel drive. The hand control provides a precise control for the driver. The self locking effect of the differential, in four wheel drive setting, occurs in response to wheel spin sensors and enables the vehicle to negotiate heavy going.
|
