The tractor-mounted implement is for picking up and stacking layers of square bales of straw, and hay etc. The individual layers consist of adjacent bales arranged in the direction of travel and bales which lie transverse to the direction of travel before and/or behind the front sides. A chassis which can be coupled to the tractor has two gripper arms (26,27) one of which can be adjusted transverse to the direction of travel. Specifically, there can the three gripper arms, the inner one (27) of which is rigid.
