The pneumatic cylinder which applies a braking force to a piston rod (4) when a tensile force is applied to the rod, has a top cap (6) and a bottom cap (9) between which are anchored an inner tube (1) and an outer tube. The rod (4) carries a piston (3) which slides inside the inner tube, and passes through a hole (13) in the top cap. Under the top cap, is a pressure equalising hole (7) through the inner tube, communicating with the space between the two tubes. Through the bottom cap (9) is a hole connecting the region under the piston to atmosphere. Another design incorporates a speed control device in this hole.
