Non-consumable electrode welding head - with oscillating longitudinal and vertical drive for electrodes flanking filler wire

A welding system is based on a welding head with a central filler wire, flanked by two slightly inclined non-consumable electrodes which are oscillated by a bevel gear drive. The welding head is mounted on a slide which is moved by a rack-and-pinion drive longitudinally and has a separate feedscrew drive for its vertical motion. A pickup indicates the angular position of the electrodes and a stabiliser holds the arc length constant. This increases the productivity by the reciprocating longitudinal movement which eliminates unproductive times and requires no tolerances for seam length. The automatic control improves the weld quality and the utilisation of the arc heat.
