Gas cooled machine with heat exchanger tubes in stator casing - has radial and axial deflector plates guiding gas flow to give evenly distributed cooling

The cooling tubes (23) of the heat exchanger (30) are mounted in a circumferential space outside the stator core (21). The machine stator (21) and rotor (20) are provided with cooling ducts, and are enclosed by covers with inlets and outlets. The outlet gas is confined within one section of the cooler by circumferential platen (5) and radial plates which divide the cooler into sectors. A part-cylindrical plate (4) divides the cooling tube space into two sections, one radially outward from the other, and gives a counter gas flow between sections. The direction of gas flow alternates between each circumferential sector, of which there may be for example eight round the machine. This gives a cooled gas inlet to each end of the machine, and only small temperature differences between ends. A more uniform temperature distribution in the machine results.
