This invention relates to improvements in the operation and functioning of devices for measuring and transferring predetermined volumes of a liquid sample and possibly subjecting said volumes to analytical operations such as microbiological testing. The method of this invention improves fluid flow and/or renders bacterial growth more homogeneous by adding polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to the liquid sample or by having PVP in the volume subjected to microbiological testing. A device containing PVP useful for carrying out microbiological testing is also disclosed.
