In examining a patient, a first emitter-receiver system (1) comprising a plurality of elements controlled in phase emits a fan- shaped pattern of elementary ultrasonic beams, and a two- dimensional fan-shaped image of a section of the patient's body is produced in real time by a visualization device (5). A second emitter-receiver system (2) emits a second fan-shaped beam pattern at a predetermined angle with respect to the first. The two systems operate in alternate sequence, the two resultant images of the body section being formed at the same rate and superimposed. A distortionless general image having high resolution is thus produced on the visualization device. <IMAGE>
