2-Hydroxy-n-propyl chloride substituted in the 3-position by o-1 m- or p-aminophenoxy, m-aminobenzyloxy, p-aminophenylmercapto or p-aminophenylsulphonyl groups is made by reducing the corresponding nitro compound by catalytic hydrogenation. 3-(m-nitrobenzyloxy)-and 3-(p-nitrophenylmercapto)-2-hydroxy-n-propyl chloride are made by reacting epichlorhydrin with m-nitrobenzyl alcohol and p-nitrothiophenol respectively. 3-(p-nitrophenylsulphonyl)-2-hydroxy-n-propyl chloride is made by oxidation of the corresponding nitrophenylmercapto compound.ALSO:The invention comprises water-soluble dyestuffs containing at least one group of the formula: where Z is the linkage -O-, -S- or -SO2- and X is chlorine or bromine, and a process for making them by reacting together dyestuff intermediates by methods known to be capable of converting them into dyestuffs, at least one of the intermediates containing a group of the above formula and at least one containing a watersolubilising group. Dyestuffs specified are of the azo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine or nitro series and may be made by coupling reactions to form azo dyes, by reacting amines containing a group of the above formula with phthalocyanine or anthraquinone sulphonyl chlorides or with ochloronitrobenzene or 1- amino -4- bromo-anthraquinone -2- sulphonic acid, or by reacting a water-soluble coloured compound containing at least one -Z-M group where M is hydrogen or an alkali-metal with epichlorhydrin or epibromhydrin or with an alkali and 1 : 3- dichloro -2-propanol or 1 : 3- dibromo -2- propanol.
