1302870 Organotin compounds KYODO CHEMICAL CO Ltd and SUMITOMO BAKELITE CO Ltd 28 Nov 1969 [30 Nov 1968 (3)] 58418/69 Heading C2J [Also in Division C3] Organotin compounds claimed per se have the formula where (a) R is a substituted or unsubstituted C 1 -C 18 alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl group; (b) SX is a mercaptan residue or-SR<SP>1</SP>COOR<SP>11</SP>where R<SP>1</SP> is a substituted or unsubstituted C 1 -C 8 alkylene, cycloalkylene or alkenylene group and R<SP>11</SP> is H or a substituted or unsubstituted C 1 -C 18 alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl group; (c) SY is SX or or G-(-R<SP>1</SP>OOCR<SP>111</SP>S-)z (where R<SP>1</SP> is as above, R<SP>111</SP> is a substituted or unsubstituted phenylene or C 1 -C 8 alkylene, cycloalkylene or alkenylene group, and G is O, C, CH or S with Z being respectively 2, 4, 3 and 2 or 4) or (where R<SP>1</SP> is as above, E is SX or or r = 0-2, q = 1-3 and q + r = 3); and (d) f = 1-4, t = 1 or 2 and is 2 if SY is monovalent, m and n satisfy valence requirements for tetravalent Sn, p is at least 1 and I is at least 2; the compounds must contain at least one or grouping. These compounds, inter alia, may be prepared by a claimed process for making organotin compounds, wherein either (1) RSn(S)SH or [RSn(S) 1À5 ]l is reacted with [RSn(SX) m (SY) n ] p or H,SY (s = 1-4) at up to 300‹ C., or (2) RSn(Hal) 3 is reacted with M s SY or MSR<SP>1</SP>COOM (M is an alkali metal, Hal is halogen) at up to 100‹ C. and the product RSn(Hal) d (SY) e (d, e are 1 or 2 and d + e = 3) is reacted with caustic alkali or alkali metal sulphide or hydrosulphide at up to 100‹ C. The reactant may be obtained by an initial dehydration reaction between a starinoic acid RSn(O)OH and H s SY. In a modification of (1) (not claimed) as described in example, the reactant [RSn(S) 1À5 ]l is replaced by [RSn(S)] 2 O. The examples describe the preparation of specific compounds as defined above and (example) a polythiostannoic acid of indefinite formula wherein-S- links have been replaced by -SCH 2 COO links.
