If desired the ribbons may be processed into threads 6a and combined with different natural or synthetic threads or ribbons before being cut into strands of length 0.5-10 cm. A binding agent may be sprayed through nozzle 44. If synthetic leathers &c are required as the endproducts the binder is an emulsion or non- aqueous solution of polyvinyl chloride or acrylic polymer, polyvinyl acetate, butadiene copolymerised with styrene and/or acrylonitrile or polyurethane. If surgical dressings are the intended use then water is the binding agent and a polyol plasticiser. Powdered binders may be sprayed onto the inside of caisson 34 from nozzle 44. The strands and binder particles agglomerate on the moving mat 35 aided by suction and after consolidation between rollers 46 are passed to an oven 47 where the fibrous cloth is dried and the binder solidified. The ribbons 6 may be subjected to other treatments such as tanning, dyeing plasticising and/ or waterproofing either before or after they are cut up into strands.
