<p>PURPOSE:To uniformalize the perpendicualr orientaion of liquid crystal molecules and at the same time reduce rising response time by using quaternary ammonium salt having two lengths of spectific long chain alkyl groups as an orientation trating agent of liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION:Transparent glass substrates 1, 2 are opposedly disposed by way of a spacer 3 and a liquid crystal 4 is sealed hermetically therein. Transparent electrodes of In2O3, etc. are beforehand stuck on the inside surfaces of the substrates 1, 2. Quaternary ammonium salt having two lengths of long chain alkyl groups of carbon number 7-22 shown by the formula is added as a molecule orientation treating agent at a suitable amount to the liquid crystal 4. Or the substrates 1, 2 having been stuck with transparent eletrodes 5, 6 are dipped in the soln. of this treating agent, after which the liquid crystal 4 is injected. With the display cell of this construction, the liquid crystal molecules are perpendicularly oriented while no voltage is applied, but when a fixed voltage is applied between the electrodes 5, 6, the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules disturbs and the display operation is thus accomplished.</p> |
