<p>Sea waves are used to operate air pumps, and the compressed air is piped to the shore where it is stored to provide electric energy. The appts. has two slotted vertical columns that are fixed to the sea bed, and two rods are placed in the slots such that the rods, which lie parallel to the wave front, are free to rise and fall vertically. A large float carries the two rods and has, mounted on its sides, air pumps whose piston is pushed inwards by an arm attached to two flat plates at right angles to each other, and which lie face on to the waves so as to be rocked about a pivot formed by the lower rod by the wave motion. A counterweight which is connected to the pump piston restores the piston to the outermost position.</p> |
