Continuous fermenter for prodn. of methane from manure etc. - has piston to push manure through horizontal buried conduit

A piston is used to push the fermenting material through a conduit, pref. a horizontal conduit which is mainly buried underground. The upper part of the conduit is pref. sepd. from the remainder by a perforated grill. The grill holds down the stable litter etc. while allowing liq. manure to rise, clear of encrustation, above the grill. A pump is pref. employed to recycle liq. manure from above the grill into the mass of stable litter below the grill; this reintroduces fine particles which have risen through the grill, back into the fermenting mass. Horizontal conduit is more convenient, esp. when buried, than vertical tower.
