A signal representative of the speed of rotation and axial setting of an axially movable rotating component (10) is provided by a member (11) associated with the component and a sensor (14) e.g. a capacitive, inductive, magneto-resistive or Hall effect device. The surface of member (11) is generally conical so that its distance from the sensor varies with the axial position of the rotating component. In addition the member (11) has a projection (12) and a slot (13) whose distances from the sensor remain constant so that the resulting frequency of the sensor output depends on the speed of rotation of the component. In a further embodiment a disc with projections of differing heights is mounted on the component. The component may comprise the rotor of a fuel injection pump for an IC motor.
