The gripper has a magnetic system (2) provided with an air gap (9) directly opposite that part (8) of the component or workpiece that must not be touched. A support rod (4) projects down to contact that part of the component that may be touched. The magnetic system comprises one or more axially symmetric magnets (3) and one or more adjustable support rods (4) coaxial with the magnets. The lower ends of the rods project beyond the lower surfaces of the magnets. The components or workpieces may be large turbine wheels.
