The alloying rods can possess any desired dia. within a limited range without requiring any major adjustment of the machine. The machine drives the rod towards the melt via driving rolls and guide rolls, which are easily replaced to suit rods with a polygonal cross-section. The speed of the motor driving rolls can pref. be altered continuously to vary the delivery speed of the rod from zero to max. The machine pref. includes a transducer measuring the length of rod delivered to within e.g. 0.2m and displaying the length on an illuminated meter. An electronic pulse counter is pref. used to switch off the motor when a prescribed length of rod has been fed into a melt. Automatic feeding of a desired wt. of alloying rod into a melt.
