recovery from soln. in the electrolyte leaving membrane cells in the electrolysis of aq. alkali chloride solns. involves treatment with alkali hydroxide to form alkali chlorate, liberation of C12 from the resultant chlorate and the chlorate formed in the membrane cell in the anolyte and return of the treated anolyte to the anode compartment. Treatment of the anolyte with alkali hydroxide takes place at 70-90 deg.C in a pH range of 5-9 (6-7). Residual dissolved C12 in the circulating electrolyte is avoided and the treatment is very simple.
