When the breaker is closed, the current flows between the upper (2) and lower (3) connection plates through the rated current path (16, 17) and the power current path (4, 5) and through the cylinder (6) and high-current contact (11). If the drive rod (9) is moved in the breaker's out direction, both current paths are broken and an arc appears between the power contacts (4, 5). The pumps (6, 7) compresses the insulating gas (e.g. SF6) and expels it through the insulating nozzle (12) upwards towards the arc. The plasma is thereby pushed out of the nozzle (13) into the space between nozzle (13) and the fixed contact.
