Support and guide rail for magnetically suspended train - has conductive non-ferromagnetic layer and ferromagnetic layer giving linear drive

The rail has a longitudinal slot accommodating a support arm (14) extending from the body of the train and carrying a magnet (16) at its free end. The rail has a layer (22) of a non- ferromagnetic, conductive material which extends horizontally so as to surround the line of movement of the magnet (16) on all sides. A second layer (26) of ferromagnetic material is applied to the first only above the line of movement of the magnet. Pref. the two layers (22,26) are applied to the inside surface of a C shaped concrete rail, with the first layer (22) comprising copper or aluminium and the second layer (26) iron or steel. (DS).
