Granular materials such as seeds are coated by agitating them in suspension in an air stream. Warm air is supplied through supply duct (8) and regulated by flap (9). The coating material is supplied in solution or suspension through inlet (10) and spray (11). The granular material is agitated to form a central upward fountain (6) which is restrained by the upper grid (4) and falls back along the sides of the container (2) into funnel (3). The material then re-enters the central rotating vortex zone (13) and is again raised to fountain (6). The spraying phase can be followed by a drying phase during which spray.
